Abstract
This Summary of Awards presents brief descriptions of projects funded by Advanced Environmental Research and Technology during Fiscal Year 1977. For each research project, the problem area is described and an attempt to indicate how the research may help to solve the problem is made. The program element 'Managing the Natural Environment' aims to provide an economically and ecologically sound scientific basis for mitigating man-caused threats to natural environment in ways that are compatible with other social goals. The program attempts to identify, understand, and contribute to the reduction of contamination problems arising from the manufacture and use of chemical products and the mining and processing of metal ores, and supports continued research on land use, urban hydrology, waste water disinfection, and sludge management. The program element 'Disasters and Natural Hazards' seeks methods and techniques that can provide the most cost-effective protection caused by natural hazards and disasters.
