Abstract
The publication reports on activities between research workers and the individuals, organizations, and agencies concerned with public action relating to natural hazards. In this issue, the lead article is an invited comment on a new role for voluntary agencies in advancing hazard mitigation methods. An article on hurricane awareness describes a joint effort by certain Texas agencies to alert Texas coastal residents to the dangers of hurricanes and to encourage individual preparedness activities. In an article on lightning it was suggested that cosmic rays could provide the necessary energy, about 100 million volts, to initiate lightning. Also described is a project on natural hazard mapping and research and two new monographs on hail suppression and technological hazard management. A Washington Update section includes a description of the President's reorganization project, a five year program to translate into readable English 6000 pages of HEW regulations, and new rule making regarding hazard evaluation and mitigation by the FDAA. Also, the publication of state earthquake maps, flood plain management, public participation, grants, conferences, and recent publications in the field of natural hazards are described.
