Abstract
Results of an experimental study on various aspects of concrete masonry prisms testing are reported. The project encompasses the following material: a review of correction factors for prism geometry in the Uniform Building Code; effects of capping materials, height to minimum specimen ratio, bond configuration and mortar bedding on the compressive strength of prisms; influence of ASTM and UBC recommended curing procedures on specimen strength; correlation of prism strength with full-scale wall strength; and recommended changes in prism construction/test procedures and building code modifications based on test results and literature review. In addition to investigating ungrouted concrete masonry for which current test procedures are questionable, attention was devoted to grouted masonry for which more information is required to make sound judgments. Recommendations deal with code correction factors, two-course prisms, proper prism grouting, capping test specimens, curing conditions, and bearing plate thickness. Diagrams, illustrations, graphs, and references are included.
