Abstract
This issue discusses the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, noting that its two objectives are to help alleviate suffering resulting from disasters in foreign countries by providing rapid, efficient, and relevant response to requests for emergency relief and to strengthen the ability of foreign countries to cope with disaster by increased reliance on their own resources. Recent reports on lifeline earthquake engineering in Japan are summarized as is a handbook entitled, Emergency Health Management After Natural Disaster. Some conclusions and recommendations on earthquake prediction are supplied and approaches to the mapping of mudflow and mudslide hazard areas are examined. A list and description of conferences is included and recent publications on such topics as earthquakes, volcanoes, flood preparedness planning, and emergency planning for dams are summarized.
