Abstract
This report concerns the development of alternative hazard reduction strategies for unreinforced masonry buildings. The major characteristics and evolutionary trends of different types of unreinforced masonry buildings in different urban contexts are summarized. Major damage patterns from past U.S. earthquakes are identified, as well as factors such as configuration, use, location, and construction technology which might affect the seismic performance of different subcategories of unreinforced masonry buildings. A mix of structural, non-structural, and operational earthquake loss reduction strategies appropriate to building characteristics and occupant resources is recommended.
