Abstract
This publication lists and summarizes research awards granted by the National Science Foundation's Directorate for Engineering during the first quarter of fiscal 1983. The Directorate comprises the Office of Interdisciplinary Research and four divisions: the Division of Chemical and Process Engineering, the Division of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Division of Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering, and the Division of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics. Programs of each division are briefly described. Awards were made in the following areas: chemical and biochemical processes; engineering energetics; kinetics, catalysis and reaction engineering; minerals and primary materials processing; particulate and multiphase processes; renewable materials engineering; separation processes; thermodynamic and transport phenomena; earthquake hazard mitigation; geotechnical engineering; structural mechanics; hydraulics, hydrology, and water resources; environmental and water quality engineering; automation, bioengineering and sensing systems; computer engineering; electrical and optical communications; quantum electronics, waves, and beams; solid state and microstructures engineering; systems theory and operations research; fluid mechanics; heat transfer; mechanical systems; production research; and solid mechanics. The principal investigator's name and affiliation, and the award title, amount, duration, number, and abstract are provided for each entry.
