Abstract
Results are presented of a study of the seismic response of curved steel box girder bridges. One, two, three, four, and five-span bridges are examined and a model is developed in which special elements are introduced to account for the curved geometry and boundary conditions. A study of bridge parameters reveals that the number of spans, the bridge weight, and the column height are the most influential parameters on the seismic response of such bridges. A modified version of the finite element program SAP IV is shown to be a useful tool for the seismic analysis of these bridges. A design criteria is proposed on the basis of the parametric analysis.
