Abstract
Approximately 150 California companies with earthquake programs were surveyed. Larger firms were more likely to have active earthquake programs than small firms; firms with essential functions that could be seriously interrupted by an earthquake, such as utilities and banks, also tend to have more vigorous programs. Most firms, through the efforts of both top management and lower level employees with safety-related responsibilities, began their programs around 1980. Elements of earthquake programs included: centralized corporate safety audits, nonstructural survey and retrofit programs, large-scale structural strengthening of buildings, storage of emergency supplies, evacuation plans, and implementation of intra- and inter-company communication networks.
