Abstract
The report deals mostly with buried segmented and jointed pipelines. It describes damage to water and sewer pipelines in recent earthquakes in the U.S., Japan, and China. Available methods, criteria, and techniques are assessed for pre-earthquake preparation, survey of damages, restoration and repair of damaged systems, design and construction of new pipelines as well as for retrofitting existing ones. A survey is included of on-going activities in the advancement of knowledge regarding the behavior of segmented pipelines during earthquakes. Scientific and engineering information needs are identified and recommendations made.
