Abstract
The workshop was organized to assess current research, design, and regulatory efforts on repair and retrofit of structures in the United States. The objective was to define research that would enable the U.S. earthquake engineering community to address problems related to a reduction of hazards posed by existing structures. Participants discussed research needs in the areas of: (1) reinforced concrete and steel structural systems (frames, walls, foundations, cladding, and bracing); (2) masonry structures; and (3) industrial institutional buildings with emphasis on critical systems within the buildings. Two major general research themes were identified at the Workshop: (1) performance of structural or nonstructural systems in existing buildings; and (2) performance of retrofitting or repair systems. A summary of reports presented at the workshop is included. Appended to the report is a summary report of a similar U.S.-Japan workshop held in Tsukuba, Japan.
