Abstract
The study attempts to determine the actual cost of, and damage done to transportation facilities as a result of natural disasters between 1971 and 1981. It uses national data and empirical analysis to quantify the impact of various types of disasters on transportation lifelines. Its aims are: to define key issues of policy, and also data and knowledge gaps in the field of disaster impacts; to prepare a transportation damage data base; to conduct preliminary analyses of the data base; to identify a set of important next-step research questions; and to identify the general vulnerability (i.e., damage) to transportation systems and infrastructure resulting from natural disasters.
