Abstract
The American Society of Civil Engineers, Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering was awarded a grant by the National Science Foundation to develop a computer-based database of pipeline damage and enter data collected from the Loma Prieta earthquake. The earthquake occurred near the San Francisco Bay area in California, USA, on October 17, 1989. The purpose of the project is to develop a computer-based database to preserve information on the location, pipe size, pipe material and type of pipeline damage for the engineering, geological, seismological, and seismic risk communities, and for lifeline researchers. The resulting database and methodology will be available in a public depository, in diskette format for use on personal computers, to the engineering and scientific community for the cost of duplication. It is the intent to add pipeline damage data from future earthquakes to the database as resources permit.
