Abstract
A masonry research plan is presented based on studies of the behavior of masonry shear walls conducted at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The purpose of the plan is to acquire additional information to allow formulation of a design methodology. It consists of experimental and analytical investigations of masonry shear walls subjected to simulated earthquake loads. The experimental program consists of tests of lightly-reinforced and partially-grouted specimens representing design and construction practices in regions of low-to-moderate seismicity. The analytical work consists of formulations of equations to evaluate strength and deformation limit states and numerical studies of discreet models.
