Abstract
The publication disseminates recent information on natural hazards and its application to urgent problems relating to national, state, and local policy on natural hazards. This issue includes an invited comment on the Federal role in investigating earthquake hazards. Described are steps being taken by the Office of Science and Technology Policy to provide leadership in establishing and coordinating Federal activities. Major issues to be addressed and resolved are listed. A column on the safety of dams describes current initiatives and responsibilities related to various aspects of dam safety. A contribution on climate change and meteorologically induced hazards is presented. It is concluded that past climatic experiences are not reliable guides for future environmental planning. Miscellaneous briefs deal with travel trailer condominium problems, the 100-year flood concept, hurricane awareness, drought assistance, and water resource policy.
