Abstract
Thirty-five papers delivered at, or prepared in conjunction with, the conference are organized in three sections: (1) overview and topics of general interest; (2) rehabilitation of buildings; and (3) rehabilitation of bridges. The papers address such topics as composite structural action for realistic building rehabilitation, bridge evaluation by field testing, performance studies of grid decks for office floors, restoration of structures with compaction grouting, and polymer concrete and its application in bridge maintenance. Problems with materials, stresses, and loads are identified and codes and guidelines are addressed. It is concluded that a structural engineer should possess experience, good judgment, imagination, and a knowledge of history so that he can appreciate the challenges he faces. An appendix contains a format and methodology for developing a local rehabilitation code, regulations, or guidelines.
