Abstract
The data recorded on the Long Valley Dam during the Mammoth Lakes earthquake series provided an excellent opportunity to check the accuracy of dynamic analysis procedures for determining the seismic response of embankment dams. In this investigation the recorded seismic performance of Long Valley Dam to the earthquake of May 27, 1980, was successfully simulated by 2-D and 3-D response analyses using appropriate combinations of the values of dynamic shear modulus coefficient (K2)max in the analyses. Another 3-D response analysis was carried out to determine the dynamic response of the embankment using the same values of (K2)max and the new shear modulus curve for gravel material proposed by Seed, et al.
