Abstract
The report discusses the effects of earthquakes within hospitals, defines seismic categories in detail and how they are used, and discusses the various methods available for seismic qualification. Life support equipment (LSE) items are identified and discussed in detail. It is noted that most LSE items lack seismic protective measures. The physical seismic testing of LSE items is recommended to provide a reasonable level of assurance that they will remain operational after a significant earthquake.
